List your phone number with the national do not call list. Make sure to add your cell phone(s) too. After you register, tell the telemarketers you're on the list. They can still call for 30 days. You'll have to remind them every single time they call until the 30 days are up.

If they call back, threaten to file a complaint. I've filed 3 so far & 2 companies were shut down, as my report was the final one. If the telemarketers try to call your bluff, ask them if they're willing to risk their job to sell you something you don't want, then hang up.

Aside from the nationwide do not call list, some phone companies offer a service that makes it impossible for callers whose identity is not shown on caller ID to ring through on your line. Check with your phone company and see if they might offer such a service

When you pick up and find it's a telemarketer, ask right then and there to be put on their "Do Not Call" list. Then from now on, that company is legally obligated not to ever call you again. Fantastic, no?

Telemarketers are fun.
Me: Hello?
Telemarketer: Hi, can I take a few minutes of your...
Me: What do you think would happen if you put a frog in a blender?
Telemarketer: um... I don't know...
Me: Just take a guess.
Telemarketer: Well I guess it would be chopped up...
Me: Wrong! *Hangs up*

The "do not call" list has stopped my telemarketing calls, but you'll still get calls from local companies. If you ask them to stop, I'm sure they will.

You can stop postal junk mail, also:

This site has some tips on email spam too.

Get yourself on the do-not-call registry. That makes it illegal for them to call you unless they are a charity or politician. Otherwise, they will keep pestering you until you pick up and there is nothing you can do.

there is a site somewhere where you can have your phone number added to avoid all of these bothersome calls from coming through. We use to have it, before our move here. I myself need to find it again, as I am so sick of these calls - all hours of the day and night!

The above is one such place.. but the one I was referring to was different

etc!

Good luck!!!

If you mean your cell phone, you can't. At least, not yet. They don't have the technology now. Just ignore it, and don't answer it.
