when people stoped giving constructive criticism
example: a child colors a picture without putting any effort.

A parent might say "wow, thats great" these children seem to think they don't have to put in any effort to get praise and some even become angy.
Or "nice colors you chose or pretty good, but try staying in the lines next time) these children know it's ok for people to make mistakes and effort is worthy praise
How did they learn to handle criticism after all?

I don't think one can have too much self-esteem. One can on the other hand have too much ego. The most helpful form of criticism is the kind one can do something with and learn from, rather than merely either succumb to or rebel against.

If children are taught the value of living truthfully, finding peace of mind, behaving in harmony with their conscience, and loving all, the other things like finding the resources to come back from a big first-innings deficit will grow in good "soil".

What I felt was worse was playing sports, but never keeping score.

"We want them to enjoy the game."

And what about being able to dig deep within yourself to overcome a three-run or three-goal deficit?
