Here's a joke that may shed some light on your query:
To guys, "Dumb" and "Dumber" had $2.56 between them. They wanted to do something fun but felt they were a little lean on the finances. Then, "Dumb" got an idea. Using all the money they had, he went to a pharmacy and came out with a surprise. Dumber asked "what is it?" Dumb pulls out a box of Tampax. Dumber says, "what'd you get THOSE for?" Dumb says, "look, on the package it says we can swim, ride horses, bikes, play tennis. Take your pick."

Yes its ok with protection. When you have a shower you'll notice that you still bleed yet when you have a bath and your clean down below you'll notice that the bath does not get red from the blood because you stop bleeding when you are submerged in water. I don't know why this happens but it does. You need to use a lillet,a tampax or tampon when you go swimming because as soon as you get out of the water bleeding will start again and you don't want to be caught out. Also depending what age you are ask your mum or a close friend to explain how to insert them. Never use a towel as the blood will seep out and the towel will become heavy and lumpy like a baby's soaking wet nappy. Have fun and enjoy your swim. P.S. Swimming or walking in the pool can also help period pains.

If you can use a tampon or sea sponges (the organic alternative to tampons) then you can swim in a pool. I wouldn't recommend swimming in the ocean though, SHARKS!! Have fun!!

Yes! And you don't need to use a tampon. People think that, but the water stops the blood flow. It's perfectly fine.

Yes it ok to go swimming, nothing will happen. Once you are in the water it will stop flowing but, when you are out of the water it will start flowing,

It certainly is! Just make sure you have a fresh tampon in before you dive in. In fact, swimming is a great exercise and may relieve menstrual cramps.
