I'm looking for an inexpensive but decent upright piano for my young sons to practice on. (We're all just starting to learn.) ;-) Is Lester a decent maker? Is 350 dollars a reasonable price? It seems low to me, so I wonder.... Supposedly it's in excellent condition.

I have not heard of Lester, but if the piano is in tune, and the keys do not stick, you probably have a bargain on your hands.
Get the owner to play a song for you.

Listen for any "tin-like" sound or off-key notes. If you hear that, don't buy it. Also, note if the keys stick or if some don't make any sound at all. Hit every key (black and white) softly with your fingertip to make sure there are not any dead keys. That will also expose the off key ones.

It is perfectly okay for you to test the piano yourself and if they won't let you, then do not buy. NEVER BUY WITHOUT SEEING THE PIANO.

I hope every key works for you. If you live in a moist climate, be sure to purchase a piano heater so the keys will not get too moist. They are inexpensive and can be found at the piano stores. If the keys are a little yellow, don't worry, they may be made of ivory. I wish I knew Lester, but the main thing to consider is the sound and all the things I mentioned above. Don't worry about the brand. Also, hire a piano mover if you buy it, because anyone else might not load it properly. Have the piano turned at least every year. Good Wishes to you and your family.

If you found a piano in good condition for $350... TAKE IT. Just be sure to play it a little first and be certain the soundboard isn't cracked/broken (if it is, the piano is worthless). Don't worry about the maker, that is minor stuff for beginners. When they're concert pianists, then you can invest in the Steinway!!
