Yep - my wife and I did that. She was 3,500 miles away from me in New York Sate. I was here in London. We met on a Yahoo! group for writers. She put up a piece of personal history writing, and as soon as I read it, I said to myself "Oh my God...I have to be in this woman's real life somehow..."
I was of course, being British, not ambitious enough to think I would ever attract her as a mate - especially having checked out her picture in the group files, and having my breath taken clean away from me by her smile and her eyes that knew so much.
I gave her "feedback" on her piece, sharing my reaction to her writing. She tells me, and the friend with whom she worked has confirmed for me, that when she read it, her exact words were "Oh my God, I'm going to marry this man."
We grew closer on the net, through email, IM and finally, the terrifying, tremulous day we bought headsets, and began to IM with voice. The first time I heard her say "Hello?" my heart did backflips.
And on we went, our different worlds connected by silver threads of sound and time - I'd wake her up, on her insistence, before I went to work (which was 3 in her morning), and I'd wait for her to come home, (which was at least 11 in my night)...until it became truly important to bridge the gap with something more. She flew into London Heathrow Airport on 29th December 2003. I was late! I was also hopelessly shaved and scarlet-skinned, and more than a little starey, because it was so new to me to see her in three-dimensions. I managed to lose the photos of her godchildren she showed me on the Tube. I walked her about half a mile to my flat (which, coming from a long line of recreational walkers, I described as "just around the corner"). She had come down with flu on the plane, and took a bath while I made her some tea - that most appallingly British panacea for all ills. As exhaustion loomed for her, we went into my room, and she got into my bed. I kneeled and offered her an engagement ring, and she took it before we spent our first "in person" night together.
The following September, we moved heaven and earth and got her here to the UK, to stay. We were married on - of course - the 29th of the month. Two years on, we remain entwined and strong, and always, always laughing. We're no fairy tale - no-one is that lasts - but we're a real example of, if not love at first sight, then certainly, love at first reading...

Communication is the spice of life
I could fall in love with a persons conversation.
This is without visual prejudice
Like radio before TV, hearing or reading conjures up strong imagery that is powerful.
You gotta love it.

I don't think so, but I totally don't get the whole "internet" dating thing...I just can't imagine doing it personally...
That's just my two cents though - lots of people have met AND fallen in love that way.

no fcuking way!!! i wouldnt even ALLOW myself to let that happen. i know they say beauty is on the inside and all that crap but i wanna see a little beauty on the outside too before i commit my feelings. thats right!
i REFUSE to let myself get carried away by words on the phone or words in a letter ONLY. i gotta see me some physicals too. if only to ensure that there will be physical attractions and chemical reactions too!!! innit? lolllll
