I was watching an interview the other day with a film director an he kept talking about A and B movies in hollywood. I understand that the budget can be a big factor but what else can effect the caterory off movies? If a film has been put into 1 category can it change into another, if so how?

A b movie is basically a low budget movie made to be shown before the actual premiere. These stem from the days when a trip to the cinema could last hours and would include news reels, cartoons and 2 or more features. The b movie was essentially the cheaper and thus the first feature. Stylistically they tend to be different because of this low budget (often the same sets, props etc are used in many of these films) and rarely includes 'stars.' Also scripts might not be quite as perfect and editing etc might be rushed. These films did not need to draw the audience like the main feature, they were additional entertainment. These days the b movie style is often mimicked (though at higher budgets than 'back in the day' - I.e. Snakes on a plane) because we as viewers recognise and appreciate the parody. This is how a b movie can become an 'a' movie, when contemporary films with a b movie style are released as blockbusters . Hope this helps.

The expression comes from the days when cinemas showed two films, the main feature presentation and the B movie. The B movie was usually shorter (60-75 minutes or less) and was occasionally of comparatively poor quality.

B movies came from the fact that "A" movies were know to have great plots, dialogue and actors ....a "B" movie was one with a bad plot, acting, no real actors, etc.... mainly old horror movies were called "B movies". IT is just a general common conception of whether a movie is A or B type movie. But the main deal is what type of plot it has and is the acting any good??

Back in the good old days when cinemas showed two movies there was the main movie and a B movie as "supporting act". Now we just get one movie and a load of trailers.

A "B" movie is usually of an erotic nature but not porno and is normally on a small budget so the story lines and scenarios tend to be a bit rough, you get what you pay for , a movie that probably costs $20,000 is not going to be able to match up to one that goes to $25,000,000 is it.

The zipper that is showing in the movie on the back of the monsters costume or the appearance of the boom mikes during the movie.

I just taught a class and this was the topic for their paper...basically a B movie is made cheaply with no name actors, new actors, actors going up or going down...from the 80s anything with Wings Hauser(and now his son) and Shannon Tweed, kungfu, weird monsters, girls in bikinis on beaches(50s&60s)--you know basic junk. If it becomes a HUGE hit like BLAIR WITCH...well good for them and where are any of them now...I rest my case and I thank you.

A B movie is a "Budget" movie so will always be a B movie.

I think a B movie is when there is no famous actor/actresses in the movie. And it can become a A movie if they throw a famous actor/actress in it.
