It's a mixture. The children's board game "Chutes and Ladders" is very realistic.

A little bit of both I suppose
Have you ever made a decision to do something opposed to something else and in the end you actually do the thing that you decided against. I would call that destiny.
Or
Have you just done something out of the blue and bam it's the right thing even though you were unsure of it and just did it anyway.
I feel that destiny and happenstance or interchangeable and the ability to control both depends how how you view the situation and what is happening

Personally I think that God has a plan for all of us but it's up to us to either realize our true potential and follow it. Sometimes we do, other times we don't
Interestingly enough research has found that people who believe they have control over their own destiny are more likely to be succesful. Researchers attribute this to the power that the human mind trul possess. It seems that if you believe you have control and can do something, you are more likely to accomplish it than if you believe you have no control because thinking that it may or may nor happen and you can't help it saps someones drive to perservere and gives them an excuse to give up.

Interesting.
I believe there is a God who created us for a reason. Like every manufacturer retains blue prints for what he has manufactured or designed, and has a clear direction of how it is to be used, so does God. He has a very clear purpose why we are. Like one responder has said, we all need to pursue our destiny, destiny is not the end, it is the purpose for our being, pursue it like you would pursue a college degree, pursue it like you would pursue an opponent getting ready to dunk in your loop, pursue it like you are pursuing for excellence. When you find it you will be at peace and you will enjoy what you are doing.
We may not have a control over our destiny that is for God who retains our blue prints. But let put a rejoinder, he says; “I know the plans that I have for you…”

Yes. The life we live now, is a result of our thought-life, the words we've spoken, and our behavior and actions.
And We can change our destiny by the thoughts we continuously think, by the words we always speak, the way we perceive things,
and by our behavior(our actions).

We must keep on trying to have control on our destiny, keeping in mind that sometimes it does not work.

I don't know, but you can control only a part of your life, the rest is determined through time
