Nobody I talk to seems to know this:
The commonly held belief that Christopher Columbus knew the world was round when everyone else thought it flat is a myth. Every educated person in Europe knew that the earth was a sphere. That knowledge was already nearly 2,000 years old, dating back to the ancient Greeks. The reason every European monarch but Ferdinand and Isabella refused to back his mission is that their advisors knew (correctly) that the westward oceanic distance from Europe to Asia was much farther than Columbus, using outdated and horribly inaccurate calculations, thought. What no one knew (the Norse who had landed 500 years earlier kept it largely to themselves) was that there was a huge land mass in the middle of that vast ocean -- the Americas. So he was essentially the beneficiary of dumb luck. In fact, Columbus went to his death believing that he had reached Asia, specifically India, which is why we have to this day the rather ridiculous habit of referring to the indigenous peoples of the Americas as "Indians."
