It might not seem like a bad idea for the people who are younger, but like some others have said, once you get into the real world, the segregation disappears. Without having developed the social skills to interact with each other, failure is likely.

By your logic, we should reintroduce racial segregation as well. I doubt that you are willing to go that far. Further, research has shown that having a diversity of opinion and viewpoints in the classroom benefits everyone involved and actually increases learning potential.

Thus, it would be a regressive approach to a problem that can be solved in other ways.

I remember when I was in the 9th grade studying Biology. There was a girl that continually talked to me. we were in the front row and I don't know what her problem was, but the teacher told me "Don't talk to that girl". He knew it was useless to talk to her, I got top grades in that class for one reason. I was interested. I got A's in Music Appreciation, Arts and Sciences all through High school. It was just as natural to have girls in class as boys. After the upper division Universities went Coed, they still turned out the finest scientists and Engineers this country has ever seen. People who put forth the idea that students will learn better because of less distration, have a fish to fry. It is called Regimentation of the masses. It has nothing what so ever to do with Education and from the answers I have read so far from those who think it is a good idea, I will say to you that you do not know the first thing about Education, but those persons who advocate segregation love them. They are unique in that they think without thought and that is quite an accomplishment. I teach Advanced Electronics in a Community College. I don't get many female students because of the subject, but it doesn't make my students learn any faster. When some of you people grow up and learn to look closer at questions and who asks them and for what reason, everyone will be better off. Always question the question.
If a student does not have an inherent interest in the subject matter, trying to teach that student is a waste of time. The keyword in Education is "MOTIVATION". Without that, there can be no learning. Wise up people and don't let yourself fall into a trap. The whole idea is more Political than Educational.

I am a substitute teacher and this is a big concern at the school that I spend the most time in. I believe as do many teachers that there are definite benefits to separating boys and girls in class. One of the biggest reasons that we discussed is the fact that girls will no longer try to impress the boys. I also think that the teenagers will learn more. Also, there may be issues that can be discussed with separating the two classes. This may help in Health classes.

i don't think that it would cause less distraction, for they would be trying to sneak notes to each other and such- and they do need to learn how to deal with each other. I know when I was in highschool some of my biggest competition (grade wise) was against the boys- so i was constantly learning more and striving to beat the guys (grade wise). But at the same time could you not just send the child to a private school if you wanted them seperated?

Of course I like going to Curves which is a female only gym, just because i can focus more on me when I'm not worrying about what guys can see me...

Studies that have been done support separating boys and girls. Of course, the researchers are more concerned about the education of students and not how happy they are. Parochial and private schools were always separate in the past and those children learned to function socially just fine. With the push in this country to improve learning, it seems to me, we should be focused on what improves learning and not worrying so much about whether kids like it or not. Besides, aren't adults supposed to make decisions based on what is best for the students not on what the kids want?

I think seperating classes by gender is about as stupid as making them wear uniforms. There won't be less distraction. Kids are going to find distractions because they want them, need them, to get through school. You take the girls away from the boys, and their will probably be more fights occuring among them. Lets not forget that if you seperate them, they'll just have that much more of a reason to get together after school... which could possibly lead to more teenage mothers.

I think it would be a good option for parents. People who just say "that's retarded" are shallow and narrow minded. I know I would have done better in school in a segregated class than in regular class and thinking about and worrying about cute boys. But then again, I didn't date until I was almost 18. The children should at least still have break time/recess together though.

A lot of "professionals" say it helps keep students focused in school, but I believe in decreases the social skills of a person. The real regular world (the western world at least) has males and females together in everything except the bathroom. If a person does not learn about the opposite gender (and I mean psychologically) he or she may have problems working together with them in the future.

I think it is not practical, in the real world they will always be together. It doesn’t happen at work so why should school be any different? Kids that want to learn will learn and those that want to play around will (by play around I mean goofing around) regardless of them being together or not. Are we or are we no preparing them for the real world?

thats retarded
even if the kids arent paying attention in class its gonna be bad on them at the end and they will see that when they are held back for a year of school cuz they didnt focus on what they really should be doing in class. having boys and girls in the class is good for them i think, they have to learn about the opposite sex at some point in life, if not they are just gonna become homos
