Start > Run > type "msconfig" and uncheck everything in the startup tab
If this is XP then disable the themes service, along with every other service you don't need (there are many guides you can search for).
XP uses less ram & is faster than Win 2000 after you customize it properly. But honestly, 128mb isn't enough ram to run 2000 or XP properly, I highly recommend you track down more ram, even getting a 64mb chip will help a lot. It pretty much takes 80mb+ of ram just to get to your desktop, that doesn't leave much left for anything else.

More memory and if you want to be adventurous, get a replacment 7200rpm hard drive... Although i'm not going to go into transfering all your data....
