Democrats generally stand for more personal freedoms and support government doing more for the people such as providing health care, welfare, and other social programs. On the issues you'll find most democrats are:
in favor of protecting our environment
in favor of protecting a woman's right to have an abortion
in favor of a national health care system
in favor of using diplomacy to solve differences of opionion with other nations rather than military solutions.
against prayer in schools.
in favor of civil liberties such as the right to be free from unauthorized search and seizures.
against unwarranted wiretapping.
willing to pay more in taxes to enable benefits for society as a whole.
in favor of scientific progress even if it conflicts with religious beliefs.
Republicans, in theory, are in favor of smaller federal government. Republicans tend to align their views very closely with Conservative Christian values. You'll find that, in general Republicans are:
in favor of using military force rather than seeking diplomatic solutions.
against abortion.
in favor of reducing personal freedom in favor of goverment control.
against scientific teaching that contradicts Christian beliefs such as evolution and stem cell research.
in favor of lower taxes regardless of the consequences to the overall nation.

Democrats are more liberal, whereas Republicans tend to be more conservative, politically. Democrats view of governing is that the government should use tax revenues to solve social problems such as discrimination, poverty, disease, homelessness, education, etc. Republicans view of government is government should tax people less, which will give everyone, both rich & poor, more money to spend, which will stimulate the economy and everyone will prosper as a result.

Democrats favor big government, social engineering, welfare programs and tend to be weak on national defense. Also believe in Keynesian economics. Liberals. Republicans favor conservative values, oppose most government control. Strong on defense. Supply side economics.

Republicans pretend to try to prevent any tax increases on anyone ever, particularly the rich.
Democrats want to use public money to pay for roads and schools and parks and police and fire and health care, and realize the richer you are, the less higher taxes will really hurt you.
