Does anybody have a knowledgable explanation of the difference between Democrat and Republican?

willing to pay more in taxes to enable benefits for society as a whole.
in favor of scientific progress even if it conflicts with religious beliefs.

Republicans, in theory, are in favor of smaller federal government. Republicans tend to align their views very closely with Conservative Christian values. You'll find that, in general Republicans are:
in favor of using military force rather than seeking diplomatic solutions.
against abortion.
in favor of reducing personal freedom in favor of goverment control.
against scientific teaching that contradicts Christian beliefs such as evolution and stem cell research.
in favor of lower taxes regardless of the consequences to the overall nation.

Democrats view of governing is that the government should use tax revenues to solve social problems such as discrimination, poverty, disease, homelessness, education, etc. Republicans view of government is government should tax people less, which will give everyone, both rich & poor, more money to spend, which will stimulate the economy and everyone will prosper as a result.
