They aren't all nylon which can irritate skin. Also most leggings don't have feet and come in more colors than stockings.
Are you perhaps thinking of tights? They also come in a variety of colors and are warmer and thicker.

cause leggings look more fashionable.especially under demin minis.if i wore stockings under denim minis i would be arrested from the fashion police.and also you can wear flip flops with leggings.i have some footless tights that i tried to make look like leggings and they were itchy and not so fashionable.Leggings=Fashionable!!!

I think you summed it up already. The only reason I would ever wear them would be if it were cold and they looked cute with my outfit.
