I'm doing a speech on pirating CDs and DVDs.

If copying CDs and DVDs is illegal, then why do people do it?

Companies anticipate around 3 copies of every CD made will be burned and distributed, and this is factored into the cost of the CD, this is legal if done for family and friends and not done for money. It is illegal to sell burned copyrighted CDs or to produce them on a mass scale.

To all you illigal copiers out there, grow up. There wouldn't be a music industry if people didn't buy music. There also wouldn't be charts, which would mean radio and music television would suffer. How would you like it if you worked a full days work for only half a day's pay. People say it was too expensive, so they made downloading available on the internet and you can legally get songs for under half the price of buying the album. Yet people still download illegally. There was once a time when people took pride in buying an album, and if they wanted it they saved up and bought it. Otherwise they were content to hear it on the radio. It is not legal to make copies for your friends and family. It is legal to make a BACKUP copy, which should be just that. BACKUP. Back in the day people would lend their albums to friends if they liked them. This was how word of talent spread. Now it only takes one person to buy an album and thousands of people get it for free. Shame on you all. Music wasn't created so that you could all get it for free. If you want free music make your own, then perhaps you will see how much effort goes into the making of an album. Without charts how are these guys gonna get recognition. Unless you a a deadset Indie fan, and no im not talking to all you try hard indie fans who rip music off the internet, how can you justify this?

People need to look at what they are doing.

You go for it man- set an example, but I'd rather you led by example and didn't preach. The music industry always whines about this sort of thing- when tapes came out, they acted like it was the end of the world too- and they do overcharge. People still do buy CDs, even those who download as well, and that's for the packaging. The industry may cry because millions of albums have been downloaded for free- that doesn't mean they've lost millions of pounds of profit though, because as soon as people have to pay, they buy fewer units. I think it's good to see private individuals leading the way- the music and video industry can't keep operating as it has been doing- if it is ruined as a result of new technology, it will be because it has failed to adapt- the world won't change to suit them. Some people say that the current climate stifles new talent, but all new acts need is a lap top and a sound editor and they can get their music on the web. They may have to tour like badgers to make money, but that's the way it used to be in the Sixties and Seventies...

Other than the most notorious reason (to sell and make a profit), there are a few reasons that more honest people copy dvd's and cd's A cd or dvd is an investment that ranges from 10 dollars to 30 dollars, and sometimes more. Most people copy their dvd's and cd's as a safeguard against scratching or other defects that can render your 10 to 30 dollar investment worthless. Another reason is most people have a desire to share their tastes in music and film with friends.

People copy CDs and DVDs because it's free and easy to do.

It is legal to make 1 copy of an audio CD as a backup, as long as you're not using them both at the same time. (You may think that sounds stupid, but schools who have the same class at the same time often need multiple copies of the audio. Legally, they have to actually buy 2 sets of the audio, and cannot just buy one and copy it.)

But for DVDs and video, you are not accorded the same legal right to make backup.

because eve though they are stealing they justify it brcause:

(1)they arent taking anything physical so in their minds its less of a crime....you dont see people going into best buy and taking them off the shelf

(2)They feel most musicans are super millionaires and we the consumer are being over charged for cd...time ti get even

(3)"everyone is doing it" Since so many people do it, in their minds they have rationalized it

(4)Society looks differently on it...tell you friend you just stole a cs from the store and give it to them...then tell thme you burned a copy of your favorite album for them...them preceive those as two totally diffreent things

(5) Its easy to do. The programs such as Kazaa are easily accesible and to not require too much tech knowledge

there are more, but I am done for now

IN RESPONSE TO THE GUY WHO SAID IT IT LEGAL TO DO FOR FRIENDS...MY POINT EXACTLY...IT IS 100% ILLEGAL TO MAKE COPIES FOR YOUR FRIENDS...THE FACT THE RECORD COMPANIES FACTOR THAT COST IN IS BECAUSE THEY CANT STOP IT

because they can make money and it is way of getting extra cash besides don't you think it would be a lot cheaper to copying the CD and DVDs then buying them?

Because they don't want to pay for it. So they do the cheaper thing and illegally copy them. They also could make money out of it and sell the illegaly copies.

for CD's to get all the songs they like on one disc and for dvd maybe they copy them and put the original ones away so they don't get messed up.

Because its fun to get music and movies for free!!! Besides, the record and movie companies make there money regardless of music/movie pirating.
