Its all a bit confusing these days. In the past we had Guy Fawkes or Bonfire Night on 5th November. Nowadays we have a lot more to contend with. Fireworks start with the Hindu festival called Diwali [Divali] - The Festival of Light, sometime mid-October-ish. Fireworks then bang off again with Halloween [but why fireworks and not witches you ask?]. We then get to 5th November and all that. More fireworks follow and finally fizzle out sometime around New Year when we've all run out of ammo. Okay, if people want fireworks they're gonna have them. Slapping a ban on them will not work - the formula for gunpowder is widely known and frankly bloody dangerous if homemade. So, let's not go down that road. Health and Safety are indeed making the usual municipal fireworks displays more expensive in terms of insurance also I heard of one council which is not going to have a bonfire this year! No point in turning up then.

A petition, organised by the RSPCA was handed in to #10 about three years ago. A whole bunch of animal lovers with their dogs took a boat with large anti-firework banners on the sides, up the Thames, to Westminster where we handed in a huge petition to the PM. This resulted in small changes in the law ie. fireworks for the general public should be no louder than 120decibels, (About a car door slamming). Unfortunately a loophole has appeared in that members of the public can buy display type fireworks which are not covered by this law. I found the burnt out shell of one of these close to my house and looked it up on the web. It's description says it all, "35 shot noisemaker which puts even a military shell to shame". Then there's the 'firework season'. "From January 1st 2005. Unless a special licence has been granted (*) by the local authority selling periods for retailers will be limited as follows: October 15th - December 10th inc, December 26th - December 31st, 7 days before Diwali, 7 days before Chinese New Year" Why does it have to be so long? Our animals could just about cope with a couple of odd nights of fireworks but we've had them every night since early October, except last night when it was too wet and windy. You could do as I did and write to your MP. Get your friends to write, your neighbours, every one you can think of. This is one of my pet, (excuse the pun) hates and I'm always badgering officials about it when I get the chance.

Sure, the insurance JUST IN CASE someone gets hurt at a regulated, safe firworkd display is too high, so they call it off. But any idiot can play with fireworks in it's backyard and blow his hand off. Ain't it somethin'?

Lil by lil..right?.. The good fireworks are banned in my state. we got sparklers an firecrackers..WWOOOWWEEE!.. I think it should all b legal, let stupid people do wat they will. It's cruel but it's true, that used to b our lil way of population control and making sure the gene pool stayed relatively clean. Now all we do is gripe about over population, new standards, policies etc. to protect the dumb or in this case new policies to protect the city or state from the dumb that are smart enough to do som. stupid and sue! Ain't America just grand these days!..

If insurance is too high, it isn't being "taken away" as much as if you want it, you need to be prepared for the risks to safety and property.

They have been banned for years in the city I live. But, a few cities over, they sell them so everyone just goes there.

Yea, liability sucks. They've also started banning the game of tag in schools because its "too dangerous." God forbid children get hurt doing what they've been doing for years.

i think they should only be done at displays. ppl keep setting them off all the time and early when not needed and it frightes the animals to death. i agree with this ban and i think all animal lovers will agree with me

Can't have them in your garden in the States. The scared-of-everything-in-the-world bunch have decreed that it may be harmful to us.
