stuff I can almost gurantee you will like :

Matchbox Twenty: Mad season or Yourself of Someone like you.
One of my favorite bands since forever even though Rob Thomas has been dissapointing me with his solo work. The vocals are very passionate and the music is just plain good. I've never met anyone who didn't like then.
Blur: Anything by them. They are a brit pop band, lots of clever songs.
TheLibertines: Up the Bracket. This is kind of fast paced music, really good fresh rock sound
The shins : Oh inverted world or chutes to narrow. think these guys are considered an Indie band, but they have a lot of fans since they're music was in the movie "Garden State" with Zach braff. I'll agree with a character in that movie who said "you gotta here this one song, it'll change you're life."

Stuff you might not like but if you do you will LOVE:
The smiths and Morriessy : Legendary British Rock band who's lead singer has a lot of solo stuff out. Warning, being a morriessy fan pretty much makes you a whiny pathetic loser. (I say that being a Morriessy fan myself.)
Andrew Bird :
folk alternative musician who writes beautiful and sometimes disturbng lyrics set to really good music using, violen, guitar, bells, whistleing and of course drums. I saw him live in LA a while back and he was incredible. His drummer is Martin Dosh who has his own CDs out too I think.

Hope I helped you out. :-)

Check out Spoon - all their albums (going back to 1998) are great. Of course, Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Walkmen, Libertines, etc. are all awesome.

T-Rex reissues from Rhino are fabulous. Put them on your iPod and put a spring in your step! Ditto for Mott the Hoople.

I recommend Rasputina's "Cabin Fever!" if you want rock that sounds pretty different, and you can't go wrong with the Pixies. Lots of people absolutely love "Surfer Rosa."
