I too, didn't understand the significance of showing Sawyer the other island. The only thing that I got out of that was that perhaps Sawyer and the rest of the survivors from the plane crash didn't know that there were two islands.
The show is getting stranger and stranger and harder and harder to follow.
Have a lovely rest of the day.

The Others have video/audio on Sawyer and Kate, so they probably knew she got out of her cage. They showed Sawyer the other island so he would convey that information to her. It's obvious to everyone (except Jack) that these two care a lot for each other, and they probably influence each other to a certain extent. And if the Others aren't good at anything else, they're damned good at manipulation.

He Who Shall Be Called Henry Gale wanted to show Sawyer the pointlessless of trying to escape from the island because there isn't anywhere else to go. Remember, he say the video cameras trained oh Kate and him right now. He saw Kate ecape her cage even though she climbed right back in. "Live Together, Die Alone"

He was lying. They are all on the same island. Ben only showed Sawyer that other island so that he would think it was pointless for him to escape. Just like he did with the pacemaker thing.

To break his spirit -- to fill him with a feeling of futility....
Futility at the thought that they'd been on their island for months not ever knowing that there was a whole other island "next door". Futility at how little they can hope to be found/rescued by their people considering they never even knew about the other island. And of course, that it would be a futile attempt to try to escape for it looks like a pretty decent swim.

That's the point it's futile to try to escape they're on a different island. They want Sawyer to feel hopeless.

I think that was the whole point. That his friends are on the other island - that there is nowhere to go if they do try to escape because they can't very well swim there. Kind of like escaping from Alcatraz.
