For the most part cheaters prosper as long as they do not get caught and even then with our society the punishment rarely fits the crime. Especially when it comes to white-collar crime.
One of the other people answered that cheaters do not win in the long run but that depends on what kind of cheating you are pulling off.
If you were to ask about Lyle Alzado (sp?) the defensive lineman that resurrected his career with the Oakland Raiders by way of steroids, he took so much of the stuff that the cancer did him in at an early age. He definitely wasn't in it for the long haul. As for Barry Bonds, I can only hope that both of his legs fall off.

Most people who made it to the top cheated somehow. Very few people make it rich by being honest and hardworking. Normally they exploit. Take Paris Hilton's family. Their Grandfather made a buttload of money because he underpaid migrant workers to run the hotels. He was making a ton and paying them less than 5o cents an hour. WHOA NELLY

Not true. Before they started testing, a lot of baseball players used steroids and did not get caught, and got a lot more home runs and made a lot more money than they would have without steroids.
