I am going to school for an education major and one of the first things they told us, was to start your first day explaining the rules and enforcing them. Don't start out with a fun activity because then they will not take you seriously. Once they know what to expect from you in the classroom, then do something fun. You are a teacher, you don't need to do anything to impress them. The best thing that you can do is to teach them well, give them extra help when needed, and answer all of their questions. Use videos and visual aides to help them remember. Think of games to play that will help them expand their English. Make it fun, but don't waste time trying to be their friend, you are their teacher.

Don't try to be cool, because there is no way that we can be by their standards. Just try to be understanding, make things interesting. Nine year old girls are all about the drama. The are just starting to notice boys, but are embarrassed by it. I have a nine year old daughter who thinks that I am the biggest geek on the planet, but she loves to talk and to know that someone is around who will listen and care. She loves mystery stories, by the way. I also work at a preschool and put the school aged children on the bus in the morning, I keep an open, teasing relationship with them, I am respectful to them as long as they are respectful to me, and we get along great.

It is completely different teaching girls after teaching boys, I know! I actually find the boys easier. It may sound obvious but girls like girly things. Bring in props, things to show them, give stickers etc. Encourage them to get up there with you and participate. Compliment them, allow them to pair up more. Try to wear something interesting on your first day - not something weird - but something they will notice e.g. a special pair of shoes and popular colour etc.

Bring your dog to school. Use songs to teach. Games too. Nothing is more boring to a bunch of kids than a teacher "teaching" in the front of the class.
Teach at least 5 very fun words a day. Like lip gloss, ape, hot fudge sundae. Teach words in sentences that are funny, like "my brother is strange and eats like a pig". It is easy ot learn when it is fun.
Don't have bad breath and look tidy and clean.
Have fun.

You can show them different films with different accents and they can learn how to tell them apart and how to use the words correctly.

Don't talk down to them. Treat them like little adults and they will respect you for that.
