Excellent question!

A computer can be programmed to do many things. Picking a name randomly is done, by associating a list on names to numbers.

Like Joe = 1
bob = 2
Bill =3
and so on.

Then, the computer can be programmed to generate a "random" number between 1 and 3 so in effect it picks the name.

However, an interesting note :no domestic computer can generate "really random numbers". Why? Because they use a calculation method, or algorithm, that if used exactly in the same circumstances, would generate always the same numbers.

Most random formulas, use the time (to the nanosecond) to determine what number they are going to cough up.

So it you had 2 identical computers, powered up at exactly the same time, and coughing up numbers at exactly the same rate (every second) they would come up with the same numbers!!!

If you used real dice, for instance, this would not be happening.

Strange but true.

It works like a wheel of fortune. The computer is set to scann all names for a period of time and then stops. That picks the name. It never stops at the same name twice, because the name is deleted after selection.

Someone will just be pressing a button. Don't know how a computer would pick a name at random.
