When war is entered into for the purpose of protecting the citizens of any given country it is justifiable. We know Iraq had no WMD so we are not being made safer for attacking them. Iraq posed no threat to our freedom. If it is a humanitarian effort, then where is the humanity in killing countless thousands of innocent Iraqi people? If we are fighting terrorists over there so we don't have to fight them over here, then why are they crossing our borders undetected? Our govt. claims that we don't have the resources to protect our borders, but they fail to admit that we have the resources and the military but they are being used up in an oil rich country that did not declare war on us. When I see the sacrifices our soldiers have made with their lives and their burned faces and bodies, I have to wonder how our govt. will justify their loss when they were never told exactly what it is they are defending us against over there.

Despite some of the silliness above me, wars are seldom, if ever, won when one side kills off everyone on the other side. The allies won WWII, but there are still german and japanese people in the world. War tends to be won when one side surrenders to the other. Of course, that requires there to be an organized force to surrender. The conflicts we're slapping the label 'war' on today do not meet this criteria, and as such, are not truly wars. What is going on in Iraq is an occupation, not a war. And it is impossible to win an occupation. You can only prolong it until it inevitably ends.

victory is claimed with the total disarming of the enemy troops the subjegation and quieting of the enemy population the trial or toppleing of the currant regime and the decision to hold the country or withdraw to allow the government to reform and restore peaceful and normal activities like food production and rebuilding ,, the current war has no end as its an ideological war fought by an idiot, no war plan ,no after plan, no specific goals for the withdrawal of troops ,and the restoration of normal relations between the countries ,in other words its a pie -grab a theft of an oil pipeline and oil field,, and a trillion dollar paycheck for the service companies and arms dealers from america the worlds largest exporter of arms and ammunition ,, an olde veteran i smell vietnam or loas or cambodia in the air

Same as it has always been, the truely wealthy who concieved it profit, while everyone else suffers. That's the only victory wars ever achieve. There is a link below where you can download a great BBC documentary called "Why We Fight" all about the military-industrial complex and who profits off of War if you really want to know who wins.

This is actually an easy and short answer. The victory goes to the side that has achieved a net increase in relative power at the cessation of hostilities. End of story.

I don't see how anyone "wins" a war. You are correct. When both sides lose lives and money, how can you truely win? I think you just come out with the better of the two horrible outcomes. War is never a great thing to go through, but it is necessary in some cases. E.g. WWII and The American Revolution.

When one side surrenders to the other. Whether the cost was worth it takes time to figure out. Most wars don't seem to have been worth it. WW1 wasn't worth the cost because nothing was really decided and we had to fight WW2 because of that. The American Revolution was worth every penny in my opinion.

Depends on what the war is about. Land? Oil or food? When one side wins a battle, that means that they have taken control of another piece of a larger pie. Those whom have survived are always happy even if they lose, for at least they still have their lives.

Unconditional surrender, formally declared and accepted by the enemy and enforced would constitute victory.
