cement board directly to the studs after removing the drywall BUT do not forget to put up tar paper first as grout and cement board will allow moisture penetration. You also need to tape and cover(use the tile mortar) the jonts between sheets.

use the special screws intended for cement board and follow the recommended screwing schedule!

I went to Home Depot and told them what I would do and they gave the stuff, can't remember the name now but the tiles are still there 2 years later

Take the advice of the guy who said screws. The guy who said liquid nail is crazy. His walls will be coming down on his head in the near future. Don't let yours do the same.

First you have to remove the drywall, then attach the cement tile tile backer to the studs using backer screws that you can get at HD near the tile backer. I think they are called Backer-On.
