I have been using Dreft Baby detergent for my son's clothes. He is 9 mo. now and I am wondering ... how long before I can start using regular detergent? Also bleach for their white clothing, would it be to strong for them?

It's fine to use it now. Just make sure to keep an eye on him and see if he seems allergic to it. Bleach is fine, just don't use too much. The water will wash it out and if you get it all out with water it won't bother his skin or anything.

The reason Dreft baby detergent exists is because some babies have too sensitive of skin to use regular detergent. You can try regular detergent now and if she it doesn't irritate her skin then you should be fine. Some people never use a baby detergent and their baby does fine on it. My son's skin is sensitive so I'm going to stick with Dreft for a while.

Give it a try!

Dreft really is only needed if your son's skin gets irritated easily. Try the regular detergents -You can use regular detergent and bleach if you see that his skin is not bothered by them... just keep an eye on him-don't worry about using expensive dreft. If you really are worried about using a free of chemicals and colors detergent -use ALL or purex -I have also used arm and hammer. They all have a FREE product. They all work great! My son has exzema so I have tried them all.

I used Dreft on my first child because the child birth classes made it sound like the end-all-be-all of human existence. Its no different than other detergent. My second child I used tide detergent and bleach when needed and it did not irritate her skin at all. Good luck.

the thing with regular detergents is that they don't conserve the flame retardency that is built into some baby clothes like pajamas. If you read the back og regular detergents, like Tide, it says to use until 18 months. I suppose that it when the clothing manufacturers stop putting that chemical in the clothing. But if you use baby deteregent just for the purpose that it is less likely to cause an allergy to baby's skin, you'll be fine. Just watch out for any skin rashes just in case.

I would say that the bleach probably would be too strong, what about ivory flakes. Dreft gets too be expensive after awhile.
If he is 9months I would just use the regular detergent, that you use for the whole family, unless their is a sensitivity problem on the skin.

I washed my first baby's clothes in Dreft for about 6 months - then started washing hers with ours. After the first one I haven't used Dreft at all. Unless he has some allergies you should be fine.

I never used Dreft and my 2 children were fine. I have used Tide and Downy all their lives, and even with my grand son. Tide is a very good detergent and cleans the best and adding Clorox is also fine. Just watch for breakouts, if so it is to strong. you can add a little vinegar to to the rinse water to remove residue and scents. Yes that sounds silly and gross but after they are dried you CANNOT SMELL THE VINEGAR........PROMISE!!!!!!!!!!!

I would wait until he is at least a year maybe even two for allergic reaction's sake. When you do, use a dye and fragrance free detergent and the new gentler Clorox bleach that you can pour directly on clothes and it won't eat through. There is also a fragrance free oxyclean that I recommend over bleach. Stay away from liquid fabric softers and use unscented dryer sheets.
