Unhealthy lifestyles affect society in a negative way, add to the list those with bad driving records, those who swear, those who are not politically correct, those that can't run a mile, do push ups, pull ups, etc (assuming no handicap).

Great question and yes I think smokers should and over weight people should pay more higher health care premiums and more taxes since it is them who drive our cost up. People with bad credit in a way pay a heavy price when they need to finance something, so they are already paying their dues but these smokers and human hogs need to man up and stop leaning on society to keep them alive. It's time for some accountability.

I'm not a smoker and I'm kinda glad they are cracking down on them. I don't think it's discrimination because they have a choice to stop. Everytime a smoker smokes around a non smoker they take 4 years their life, no higher tax in the world could possibly pay for that.

If the extra taxes placed on this unhealthy lifestyle choices that you speak of were actually used for paying for smoking cessation or weight loss programs or what ever unhealthy habit you are trying counter, it would not be a problem.

But these taxes have historically just been thrown into the general fund and no programs to counter these unhealthy lifestyles ever emerge.

So it just becomes excessive taxing of a minority plain and simple.

The state of Missouri received several billion from the tobacco lawsuit and not one dime went into smoking cessation or heath care programs.

No, there are people that go through a rough patch and therefore have bad credit. Or single mothers trying to raise children on a very small income. There are those who are overweight because of medication. Children who are addicts because of their parents. Are we to punish these individuals further?

Also, if a person with bad credit can't afford to pay their bills, how do you expect them to pay for additional taxes?

Yeah, why don't we make an extra tax for those born with disabilities too. Those parents should go through genetic screening before we have to pay for their freak child. Come to think of it why not make extra taxes for arabs too, since we wouldn't have to wage a war on terror if they weren't around. We could even tax people for getting cancer because, after all, they were dumb enough to live in a country where we let companies dump Industrial waste into the water and believe it when they say its good for us.

Note the dripping sarcasm.

Ok socialist, put the KOOL- AID down!!

You're talking communism, hell go to North Korea of you like that kind of lifestyle. It's political correctness that is evil and destroying our Country.

Political correctness affects anything good in a negative way. You along with others like you would be the first ones to complain if you were taxed on what you did and blame a Conservative for it.

Sheesh!
Please STAY AWAY FROM THE KOOL-AID!!!

yeah, just what we need. another layer of bureaucracy to pay for so they can collect more tax money and more government control. let them redistribute their own money, not mine! how do unhealthy life styles negatively affect society anyhow? politically correct? arent we politically corrected to death now? everyone has such a thin skin, they sue you if you look sideways at them! surely you are a lib for you to have such ideas.

oh and iya, youve got it wrong. the smokers and fat people are dying, so they are not the ones burdening health insurance. its the people who are living LONGER that need a lot of medical care as they get older. god, why dont you do something, like go read a book and learn some facts.

My Opinion: Bad habits that cost the general taxpayer money can be made more expensive through taxation, but only after the taxing entity (government) has made every effort to curb the bad habit through education, medical treatment, counseling. Swearing and political incorrectness may offend but do not affect my pocketbook. Taxation should deal only with pocketbook issues.

If the governement is going to insist on caring for those individuals with taxes, then yes the should be forced to pay additional taxes. As for items in your list that have nothing to do with taxes (e.g. political correctness, swearing, physical prowess), it is not the government's charge according to our Constitution.
