If you are hosting you should make sure theres enough for everyone, never count on them for your dinner, tell them they can bring rolls or a desert but make sure you have everything covered because more times then not they will "forget"

I would 1st make a checklist (including them) of what everyone should bring. 2nd, before everybody got there I would only put out a limited amount of the items (that you prepared) and act like it was no more left. If they bring their dish, then fine put the rest out, but if they don't bring anything then leave your extras in the kitchen so they cannot see it. As for the taking plates home, soon as everyones done eating, put the food up. If someone says "I was gonna fix me a plate," then you just lie & say, we got some more guests coming later or make up something.

I would call them all real nice and ask them what them were bringing so you could have an idea of what you could make so your all not making the same thing!!! I'd also ask how many people in their family was coming so you can "get a quick head count so you know you will have enough food" the trick is to be as "nice as pie" so to speak to keep it all good in the family.

I don't understand how people could leave with plates of food if you didn't have enough food.

Take up the plates after dinner is served or tell everyone it is by invitation only, but that takes the joy out of the occasion.

Have dinner at another family members house.

Make sure you plan what you're going to eat and call everyone who is coming and tell them what they ARE SUPPOSE to bring, don't let it be left up to them assign everyone a dish or something to bring....Hope this helps, that is how we sometimes do it in my family......

Talk to everyone about what they are going to bring. If someone can't cook then just cook something extra.

Call everyone and ask what they are bringing and make it sound like you're writing it down. And then say "ok, so I've got you down for the ......, that's great, thanks.".
