1. Bank Holidays
In Scotland, Bank Holidays are what they say. The banks are on holiday. Not necessarily anybody else, just banks.

The next four Bank Holidays in Scotland are Monday 25 December 2006, Tuesday 26 December 2006, Monday 1 January 2007 and Tuesday 2 January 2007.

2. Public Holidays
There is no such thing in Scotland as a Public Holiday in a normal year. From memory, the last Public Holiday in Scotland was to celebrate the marraige of the Prince of Wales to Lady Diana Spencer. A Order in Council was needed to give legal effect to this holiday.

3. Local Holidays
Scotland has a series of local holidays, the dates of which are determined by the local unitary authority for the area. Some local holidays are set by tradition.

So that, for example, Glasgow Fair Monday is that Monday following the third Saturday in July, whereas Gold Cup Day (an Ayrshire local Holiday) is the Monday following the running of the Ayr Gold Cup.

It might come of surprise to Sassenachs that, in most areas of Scotland, Good Friday is NOT a local holiday.

To the best of my knowledge, every local unitary authority has decided that they next four local holidays are the aforementioned 25 & 26 December 2006 and 1 & 2 January 2007. (However, up and until 1974, 26 December was not a local holiday in parts of Lanarkshire - just another working day!)
