I mean how do you shift-help?

The shift key is a combination key modifier. This is also the case for CTRL, ALT, WINDOWS.

These must be pressed and held down while you type the regular character.

Shift allows you to type uppercase characters as well as special symbols shown on top of the key on the keyboard.
