I don't think they are a dying breed. I think it more geared towards the offense the team wants to run. The Falcons are a run first and throw second type of offense. Vick's best asset right now are his legs, he makes his best plays while running. He is getting better at passing but when the sh*t hits the fan he will run.
As for Manning, they are pass first, run second and with the Colts losing Edgerin, they really do not have a go to running back. Peyton is finding out that, even with his speed, defense are more concerned about his arm than his legs. So therefor, teams are not accounting for him to run out of the pocket. It is smart for him to do this because the other teams will have to start respecting that option which will create more one-on-one coverage and more open recievers, getting them back to where they were offensively, when they had James.
College is a different game. Sometimes you do not need a balanced attack and can just run with a pass option. Like West Vriginia, White is a run first pass second type of guy. But because he can pass well, it is tough to defend. Also, keep in mind that NFL defenses have the best college players, and college defenses have good college players and maybe one or two that will go beyond college. That is why you see guys like Pat White Troy Smith dominate in the college game, they are head and shoulders above the average college defenders. They have other weapons around them to occupy the other teams best defender, which allows them to go up against the rest of the mediocre defense. The true test for these two guys will be when West Virginia plays Louisville and OSU plays Michigan. We will truly see how good they really are.
Now take teams that have pocket QB's. USC, Michigan, Auburn and Texas (this year). All ranked in the top 10, all have pocket QB's. The reason these teams are good is because they have multiple weapons to chooose from. Great run game (with running backs) and great wide recievers. These teams runa more traditional offense and most of the time set up the pass by running and use a lot of play action.
This could be a good debate topic! I personally would like to have a quarterback that is similar to McNabb, he is the total package. He is comfortable in and out of the pocket.

No, manning>vick anyday. Apparently it's drafting(/picking up in any way) good offensive linemen that's a thing of the past. Bad lines destroy teams. Look at the dolphins. I know Daunte came off an injury, but honestly it's the o-line that was causing the majority of his and Ronnie's bad plays (/lack of production). Infact, I'll say that INTs are hardly useful for anything, as QBs with higher INTs usually have crappy o-line. Any decent QB would throw hardly any INTs if they had as good of a line as Manning or Brady or Bulger. Sometimes you get a line that is really only good at one kind of blocking (run or pass --I've been told run takes less skill on the players part), but regardless, they need to be solid.

There are less and less pocket passers every year but they will never be a thing of the past. As long as people like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady keep playing, they will always be more valuable to a team than guys like Michael Vick and Donovan McNabb.

Yes because of the changes in the defense. People realize that you can have 12 people covering the pass but without a pass rush they'll still complete passes.
EVery playoff game that Peyton Manning and the Colts have lost is due to the great pass rush of the opposing team.
Every team blitzes; some almost every play. So there is a lot of 3 and 5 step drops or roll outs. You need someone that can evade a rush.

Pocket passers at the pro level are back in vogue. Look at Brady, PManning, Bulger, Favre, EManning, etc. The running game is accomplished by running backs and they depend on the QB to aid in the passing game and reading the defense.

they are not a thing of the past, the best qb's are pocket passers, the mobile passers are great because of the double threat but i think that they wont last as long (injuries) and wont put up the numbers that pocket passers have.
gimme peyton anyday
