It's not the effort that is required that is important, it's the end results... solid or liquidy? If it is formed, meaning solid, that could be a sign of dehydration. If it's liquidy, it's likely nothing to be concerned of. Her muscles arent developed yet.

My girl would really 'push' and go all red in the face whenever she had a BM. And it was always liquidy, making us wonder what the big deal was. She stopped having to strain so much at around 4 or 5 mths I think... I did ask our pediatrician (several times) and she said it was nothing to worry about.

And NO, this does not mean she is constipated. And NO, dont use a suppository of any kind. And NO, babies that young are not suppose to be given prune juice, water, etc... Make sure the formula is being properly prepared with enough water or make sure she is being fed on demand if breastfed of course. If she really is constipated, and not just straining a bit, talk to your doctor about possible causes.

Most babies strain when they poop some times. I bet your babie has a lot of different colors of poop, too, this is normal. If your baby is well, this can be normal behavior. If your baby is not well, then she may be in need of more fluids. Try giving her water between feedings or offer her your breast more often. As a mother of five, all breastfed various lengths of time, I should tell you that we all feel uncertain at times and try to second guess ourselves. We imagine all sorts of bad stuff happening to our babies. That is normal, too. Try not too. And begin an active prayer life. You will need it. God bless you and your family.

She might be constipated which is somewhat normal. If you are breastfeeding, drink more water and eat more fiber. Remember whatever you eat, she eats. If she is formula fed, give her water in between feedings. Dairy has that effect on the body and the base of formula is milk. Another thing I did with my babies was rubbed their backs and or tummies to help things move along when they seemed to be straining.

Many baby's strain when pooping, it's normal that they turn all shades and colors when doing the dirty job. However if you are very worried, contact your pediatrician and just make certain. Good luck.

I gave my babies Karo syrup to help them with constipation. You put in- One teaspoon of Karo syrup to Two oz. of boiled water in a baby bottle. It works every time. (Make sure the bottle is cooled first :-) I was extra careful and boiled the syrup and baby bottle water together for 5 minutes, then let it cool and refrigerate it.

If you get a q-tip and put a little petroleum jelly on it and gently insert it into her anus it will help with constipation. or use a 1/2 tsp of Cairo syrup in her bottle that works right away
