If you are not nursing, it could be the formula you are giving to the baby. Babies are born with an abundance of iron, and sometimes giving a baby formula with iron can cause stomach cramps. I would lay baby on the floor on their back, and lightly rub their little tummy. Maybe putting on some light music and sing lightly to them as you rub their tum tum. Even cuddling them on your shoulder, rubbing their back at the same time, and whispering in their ear helps. Oh.........those were the days!!!! If you are giving formula with iron, try switching to the one without. This may not be possible if you are getting WIC though, as I believe they will only let you have formula with iron, unless you have a doctors note. Babies at that age, need to cry a little. Good luck, and Congratulations on your new baby!!!

Take him for a ride in the car, run the vacuum, rock rock rock or walk the baby, sing songs, make sure he's well fed and warm and diaper is clean.

P.S. Babies can also sense stress, if you're stressed, baby will be too. Take a break and have someone else watch him for a minute, even if it's just to the mailbox and back to take a break and clear your head!

If the baby has been nursed, changed, burped and cuddled; I recommend swaddling. It is the only thing that worked for my son at that age. "The Happiest Baby on The BLock" is an awsome book that details many techniques to help sooth a baby. Your local library probably has it so do most book stores. It is seriously a lifesaver!

All of the above suggestions are great.

One more possibility is baby massage (which is very gentle, just lightly running your fingers over the baby's skin using massage oil - an oil for sensitive skin is best).

I learned how to do baby massage from a midwife when my baby was one-month old. Talking softly to your baby and doing slow gentle baby massage can really relax your baby (and you!).

Once you have determined they are not hungry or wet or the usual list try facing them away from you having their tummy against your arm- often this will relieve gas and sooth their stomach as you walk. If crying continues and you are out of ideas call your doctor and see if ear infection or something else might be causing the crying. Good luck.

talk to the baby in a soothing voice
give the baby to its mother/father/favorite caregiver
