Well,
It's the same way that Yahoo, Google, and the others make money on the email accounts. It's all about advertising. If they get you to look at the advertisements then it's money for them. Other things is that their market share grows with the more people that are using it.
So, let's say that Google has 1Billion people using their email server. Yahoo has 500Million people using their email server. That would make advertisers want to use Google more than Yahoo, why? It comes down to how many people are using yoru stuff, the more they will pay. Both companies do well with target marketing as well. This is to say that if you are a 20-25yo Female who lives in Boston you will get advertisements which are different if you were a 65-80yo Male from Seattle. It's all about who you are and where you are.
That's how the companies who offer "free accounts" get paid for offering the accounts, it's all about the money,
Chad
{EDIT: If you want to get rid of the advertisements on any internet site and you are using FireFox get an extension named "AdBlock" it will allow you to filter out the advertisements, yet the people will still get paid for them.{/EDIT}

Are you ever overwhelmed and inundated by an upcoming movie release on the sign-in page of myspace?
Do you see all the artists with upcoming CD's promoting their stuff?
This is how it's all free for us. The advertisements! And they're pretty viral too.
I forget what movie it was, but myspace really outdid themselves when everyone wanted to watch "the movie" just to make those ads STOP!!!!!

20th century Fox is the owner of Myspace. 20th Century Fox has made a lot of popular movies and TV shows. Needless to say, the owner of myspace has money to spare.
