The Independent party, they have 2 seats in the House and will win one in the Senate. As witnessed by Ross Perot's two runs at the Presidency there is a large segment of the population willing to accept something other than Democrat or Republican.
I like and associate with the Libertarian party but half the candidates merge with the Green party making it look like another escape for hippies.
To make a decent run the candidate must have the financial resources to take the run to the election. The two main parties have a stranglehold on corporate and special interest financing, so the candidate woudl have to have independent resources, like Perot.

One of these days, the US is going to get fed up with its present political system. The Rep and Dem are just two faces of the same coin and it doesn't seem to matter which side of the coin comes up, there are massive screwups.
The options are physical revolution, or political revolution, and a third party -- especially one that will show concern for the environment -- is the most viable option.
The motion for change will likely be overwhelming and will probably come when the current, or next, president makes a stunning international gaffe, and will be repudiated by a majority of the electorate. That's when the third party will form and a charismatic leader will step forward from its ranks.

It should be possible but I doubt it will ever happen. The two major parties have way too much influence and control. On top of that they have people thinking that it's a wasted vote which will then cause the person you least want in office to win. Then there's all the stupid people out there that just run with the crowd.

The day is soon coming when the American people will be so disgusted with the two parties we now support that a third and maybe even a fourth party will be organized and supported.
The Democratic and Republican parties are slowly killing themselves and their ends may be just around the corner.

Very interesting. But no, I don't see this happening anywhere in the near future. It would be pretty much impossible since both major political parties have state party's organized, which then can bring forth grassroots efforts. Grassroots are the biggest factor in getting someone elected, but if you have no way of organizing activists you can't do much.
A third party just doesn't have the unity that Republicans and Democrats each have within their own party.

Some say America already did - Abraham Lincoln.
The Republicans were just starting out then.
Will it happen again? Probably only if one of the two major parties falters, badly.

we already did his name was Teddy Roosevelt his party the bull moose party. This party was a splinter group from the republican and democratic parties. At present no third party has it's act together enough to attract a serious following as none of them has stands that appeal to both republican and democratic voters. The current third parties are extreme left or right wing splinter groups and thus doomed until they moderate there stands to appeal to all.

Nope the party candidates have too many funds available to them and too many voters vote strictly by party without even understanding the issues or what they are voting for.

I'm thinking it might be possible IF there is someone major-serious exceptional. But he would have to be perfect and everyone around would have to be exceptional.
I don't think anyone wants to be president anymore. We have degraded the office so much, it's ridiculous. And we are all guilty.
