It is interesting to see all the different answers to this question. It seems both parties are having an identity crisis. I live in Repub territory, and disagree with with the basic philosophy in large part, but do not consider myself a bona fide Dem either. I mainly don't like the implication that if you are a Christian, you must be a Republican. Or if you believe in family values you cannot be a Democrat. If you believe too many generalizations, or listen to too much rhetoric from either side, it will have your head spinning. Repubs represent big business, Dems support social and environmental programs. The middle class has to decide which party will help them most within a given historical time. Both parties are obligated to whoever contributes the most to their campaigns. So, you have to look at not only basic philosophies, but who is holding the puppet/purse strings. BTW, birdsnakecat's answer is typical crap spouted by neo con Republicans of the particularly hateful persuasion. Just as many Democrats are hard working and pay taxes, so what he says is a fallacy.

Sometimes there's not much difference between Rs & Ds, but there are fundamental differences between Liberals and Conservatives.
Cs believe that an individual is responsible for his/her choices.
Ls believe that they are responsible for everyone else's choice because other's are not smart enough to make the "proper" choice.

Sadly all the things these other people are quoting are now false. I would suggest using the term Republocrat to describe the vast majority of either party that no longer try to further the traditional values of their party, but rather to further the agenda of the corporate sponsors that pay for their multi-million dollar campaigns.

Not much anymore, I can't stand either party - all a bunch of liars. An honest answer today would be "the animal used to identify each party". They both want:
to steal our hard earned money, to make us dependent on them, to control our lives, to control our information/news. Chit, I could go on forever. They all suck! We need a new party or a revolution. Wake up sheepole, they want us to fight amongst ourselves - that way we don't pay attention to what is going on behind the curtain.
