Don't listen to anybody who steers you to one brand or another.

Shoes aren't like tires. Your feet are entirely unique. While most brands fit and work fine for most people, there is no one brand known universally to be the best. Do you pronate or supinate? High arches, or flat feet? Do you need stability control?

I personally have great luck with New Balance shoes, particularly for running. Speciality stores (as for running) often do a much better job of looking at how you walk and run, and placing you in a shoe designed for your characteristics.
