my 50 yr old friend broke her ankle and has cast from the foot to just below the knee , the drs. say she must go to rehab before she can go home. are there any such places that are not nursing home center , for younger people togo.too.?

I would discuss options with the doctor (if I was your friend)
The reason I say this is that if she only has a broken ankle and can get around on crutches then there should be no need for extended hospital care (rehab). I mean if she is capable of caring for herself she could do that at home.
There might be other reasons for why he wants her there such as watching for complications, (rejection of plate, screws or pins placed in her ankle.) that might need immediate care. You do not say whether her ankle was a simple break or if it required extensive reconstruction ( shattered or a simple break)
She might check out an assisted living center rather than a full nursing home.

yes it does happen and there might be a reason the drs say for her to do this, she might need extra care because of the break
