Unless you are employed by these organizations or have relatives who are, what difference does it make to your personal life if the home teams win or lose? Obviously it is entertainment, but why should anyone care who wins or who loses.

Unless you have an economic interest in the team, you are right. Mostly, these are people whose self esteem needs an external Icon to feel worthy. Pretty sad in my book. Go play a sport, better for you with the exercise, make some friends, and have some fun. Even then it doesn't matter who wins as long as you have fun.

Because then I would have to watch stupid reality shows, which are based on other people's lives who don't have jobs. Why would I care even a little about them? Or I would have to pay attention to politics, in which case I would probably just watch the grass grow because it is more exciting. As for the winning and losing, what would be the point of watching if score didn't matter?
Believe it or not, there are many life lessons that can be learned through sports.

I am a big sports fan but I will tell you this. I have done alot of thinking about your question. And I also feel that there is much too much emphasis on sports. According to Ralph Nader, if we as citizens were as knowledgeable about our politics as we were about sports, this would be a much better society. More responsible. We would demand justice from our elected officials. We would be good educated voters. On a last note I will add this. I feel that although there is too much emphasis on professional sports, at the same time there is far too little emphasis on physical education in our schools. Children are not taught how to stay in shape. And this has led to widespread obesity and numerous other health problems associated with obesity. Physical education and sports are associated but are also two different things. To stay in shape, one does not necessarily have to compete in a competitive type sport. And the brain can definitely function better if a person feels physically fit. The two are connected.

It's much the same, I guess, as rooting for the protagonist in a drama, except a happy ending is less of a certainty. That magnifies the emotional highs and lows that result, which can be addicting to some.

It's the same as wanting say your high school football team to win. Obviously you're going to root for your own and not another school.

To me it's all psychological. If your home team does well it reflects your town/school as a whole.

To get away from the stresses of everyday life. Why do people go to movies or watch tv? Why do they care? It's just entertainment (like you said) and it's a part of it. It's a competition, so you want to see who is better. Do you think every other form of "entertainment" is stupid?
