how did you do it?

my best friend is a guy and our relationship has been emotionally unhealthy for quite some time, it is causing both of us undue unhappiness.

how do you let go of someone whom you miss and love?

PLEASE, no rude/nasty answers. that is not what i'm looking for, thanks...

From what you say it's clear that you feel the strain in this relationship, however without knowing why the relationship is so strained there isn't a lot of advice one can give and be right about it.

I would however suggest that before you "let go" of someone you love, why not try to step back, take a breather first and see what it is, that is making you both unhappy in the friendship?

I'm sorry I can't offer a better answer, but it wouldn't really be appropriate without knowing the facts.

Best of luck

I had to let go of someone that I was deeply in love with because of distance and we would never get to see each other so it was for the best but I'm still sick about it and not a day goes by that I don't wonder what he's doing and how he's been. We had to cut contact off all together because it would just be too painful to talk and hear each other's voice's and know we could never see each other. One of the hardest things I've ever had to do. There is no particular way to do it other than to just turn around and walk away and puke your guts out and cry everyday for months.

I have had to let someone go that I loved deeply. But our situation was because of distance. What I done was set down with them and just talk about our relationship, and I told them that I thought it was best for now that we go our seperate ways and just stay friends. In your case if you are just friends, tell him that you think its best if you just chill for a while with other friends.

yes, I have. my friend whom i was very close too, had to move three states away from me, and go to foster care because her mother refused to put out my friends uncle, who was abusing her, it was very hard for me. It took forever to get over it, I havent spoke to her in a year and a half, but at least I know she is safe. In the end you shouldnt just do whats best for you, and how you will cope with it, be sure that you look at it from your friend's view too.
