If a lawn bench was priced at 523.89 was just discounted 10% and another 4% if paid for in cash.
A. If you pay with cash, what will the bench cost you after the discounts are applied?
B. If there was a 20% mark up from the wholesale cost to get the selling price of 523.89 what was the whole sale cost?

(multiplied price times 0.90)

Sale Price = $ 471.50

4% Discount for cash = your cost of $ 452.64
(multiplied discounted price by 0.96)

Assuming a 20% mark-up to arrive at the Retail Price,
then: 1.20W= 523.89
W = 523.89 / 1.20 = $ 436.57 Wholesale Cost

A. After the 10% discount, the price is 0.9*523.89=471.50. Another 4% on top of that gives 0.96*471.50 = 452.64
B. Let x be the wholesale cost. Then 1.2x = 523.89, so x = 523.89/1.2 = 436.58

For word problems itis good to know this...

x percent of y is "how much" ==> (x)(y)=how much

so multiply the percent discount by the original cost
=how much to subtract from the original cost to find out how much you actually pay.

multiply the original price by the percent markup
=how much you subtract from the original price to find the wholesale price.

Heres a good formula to remember ...

x / 100 = is / of
Where x is the percentage and 'is' and 'of' refer to the whole numbers (being discounted)

For example, twenty IS what percent OF 100. you would get ...
20 / 100 = ? / 100
Cross multiply and solve for what you dont know to get 5%

If you restate your questions in this way ... I got

a. 452.65
b. 419.11
