i need to drill a five inch hole into a eight inch concrete basement wall with rebar?

USE A ELECTRIC HAMMER DRILL WITH CONCRETE 10" OR 12" BIT. START WITH SMALLER BIT SIZE LIKE 1/4".
CIRCLE 5" HOLE WITH HEAVY PENCIL.. DRILL HOLES ALL WAY AROUND ALONG PENCIL MARK.
THIS WAY YOU WILL HAVE A NICE SLIGHTLY LARGER 5" HOLE. KNOCK OUT PLUG WHEN CIRCUM IS DRILLED.

TAKE YOUR TIME... ONE 1/4" BIT SHOULD DO JOB. UNLESS YOU BREAK IT.

Go to the hardware store and buy a Tungsten carbide drill bit. It is a very strong drill bit that can go through concrete and steel. They come in different sizes. I used it to drill through the concrete wall.

It is a big hole you are talking about. So, you could use a hammer drill and make a lot of holes (separately around the perimeter and inside the circle). Then, break off the concrete with a small sledgehammer, exposing the rebars. Not too hard because it would crack the wall. You can chip it out. Cut the rebar with the rebar cutter (like the Makita Rebar Cutter). You can rent the tools from a rental place. Good Luck.

Hmm, a good SDS drill with rotor stop and a chisel end would proably do the job, though will take a little time.

The rebar could be a real pain, if you can get rid of the concrete around it, then possibly a gas axe (oxy torch) or failing that, an angle grinder might be able to get in (if you let the hole have a couple of slits as well).

If neither of these options are available, then again, depending on position, you might be able to get a hacksaw blade in there.

Certainly I would suggest SDS chisel rather than "drill" unless you have VERY fancy equipment and cutting gear to hand.

If you can use a metal locator to find a bit of wall WITHOUT rebar, then you can make your life a lot easier of course.

If you gonna have to rent anything rent a core machine which you can get a five inch bit for, it will cut through both the concrete and rebar. Using a hammer drill will take forever and is alot of work on solid surfaces. A core machine with a new bit does all the work for you you just have to mount it to where your drilling with a concrete anchor and use water to keep the bit cool, it will prevent dust also.

There is a tool to put the hole through the concrete wall that will cut through the re-bar in one operation, you require a concrete coring bit and drill they are big and sometimes require temporary attachment at site of hole to be drilled or more precisely "cored"
these bits come in a variety of sizes with different depth or thickness capabilities but most thickness can be accomplished from one side if the core is removed while drilling go to your "Big Box" tool rental department they will most likely have what you need... to per example core hole for dryer vent...

u need to get a boring machine for such a hole. if its in a wall, the machine will have to be bolted to the wall to hold it up, attach a hose to it for lubricating, messy job but the only way as a hammer drill will not do the job because of the thickness [8"] or so , and the diameter of the hole. good luck.

Just call a core-drilling company. If you can't find a local company, go to Home Depot and rent a core-drill.

A HAMMER DRILL, BUT YOU'LL NEED A SMALL HACK-SAW TO CUT THROUGH THE RE-BAR. MAYBE A CUTTING TORCH, IF THE AREA PERMITS. ANOTHER OPTION MAY BE TO USE A METAL DETECTOR TO FIND THE RE-BAR, AND GO BETWEEN THE BARS.
