I am amazed "Sway 26" that no one among the responders to your excellent question seems to have all the facts on the matter. "Jesi", as usual, does very well.
Actually, ADULT stem cell research has produced a LOT of good results and is getting better. Until recently, umbilical cord blood and bone marrow were the primary sources of adult stem cells, but recently it has been found that they can also be obtained from skin and fat, and even from deceased donors. This method is far advanced over EMBRYONIC stem cell research, which is morally unacceptable to many people and which has produced TUMORS in some recipients and caused the DEATHS of some donors. This is expected to work against poor women, who are more likely to sell their eggs.
The morning radio news stated today that 97% of the funding in Missouri for "Proposition 2", which Michael Fox is supporting, actually comes from a PRIVATE research firm that will reap the monetary rewards if Prop 2 passes. The whole thing has become a political football. Incumbent Senator Jim Talent is solidly in favor of adult stem cell research, but against Prop 2.
Challenger Claire McCaskill, who even opposes a ban on the inhumane practice of partial birth abortion, is in favor of ANYTHING that might help her win the election.
Wow, here comes "sprcpt" right after me and he's got the story TOTALLY WRONG. There is NO ballot initiative to ban any kind of stem cell research in Missouri.

The Hollywood types already do through various charities however medical research is very expensive even by there standards. So you need the only big money source capable of flipping that bill. The rewards should be massive. Religion getting in the way of progress should be crushed with absolute prejudice there has been too much ignorance slowing down human progress. If it wasn't for brave scientist doing what was right we'd all still be bled to let out the bad spirits to cure various diseases and still believe the world was flat and the earth the center of the universe. I don't know what your side thinks they are accomplishing as these embryos will only end up down the drain unless they are allowed to do some good through stem cell research. Any other path leads to a waste.

Because the way the current laws are written, there's no way to get a supply of stem cells to research on that would not be considered illegal. If a private company could do the research and it were just a matter of funding, it would have been done years ago.

Some states allow embryonic stem cell research. There is no ban on it, there is just no federal research money being poured into it. that is for two reasons.
The first being ethical, embryonic stem cell research means eggs have to be fertilized and begin developing into a fetus. For those who believe life starts at conception the process is murder.
The second reason is that why mature stem cells show promise they are limited in the "lines" that can be formed. Embryonic stem cells show no such limitations. But to date there has been only weak results with adult stem cells and the embryonic research has yielded no positive results.
For these two reasons getting federal funding for embryonic stem cell research will be difficult at best.
I applaud Michael J Fox for bringing the debate to light, but he should follow the lead of many others before him and get donatoins for his private foundation that funds embryonic research. Once they get results the NIH will probably urge congress to support it.
Another source is using the UN's health group to coordinate embryonic stem cell research throughout the world, to collect and pool the resources and experts for a common goal.

No, dcgirl, the issue isnt funding for stem cell research. You've been misled by your media. Try watching something other than MSNBC. There is no funding for EMBRYONIC stem cell research. This requires the destruction of a human embryo. Other forms of stem cell research are allowed and funded.

They also restricted the number of embryonic lines they can use. They can't legally get any new lines since 2001. So it effectively stopped the research with embryonic stem cells.

Missouri's ballot this year has an initiative to ban stem cell research.
It will not mater if it is privately or publicly funded because it will be banned across the board.
Furthermore this initiative will also severely restrict any medical treatment involving stem cells when they develop.

The point of this is not the advancement of medical research it is to denigrate those who do not want abortion to be across the board legal and paid for by tax dollars.

Great idea !
They got the big bucks from all those lousy movies , so let them pay .
Maybe with lower taxes I'll be able to afford to go to a movie .
and if they do it , they get the profits .
