...and yet only 20-30% of eligible people vote at all. Even in big elections where there is a lot at stake. In smaller, mostly local elections, turnout often goes as low as 15% or less.

So basically, 20-30% of the eligible voters (which is only 10-15% of the population) are making the decisions for everyone. Sad.

No, I think government should make it easier for people to vote. Let's get everyone involved in deciding their future, rather than just a few.

You asked two different questions.
What government wants is for as many people to vote as possibly can....so why make it harder?

Then you talk about corruption, and the government polices that as good as they can. Those who are given cigarettes probably don't have the knowhow to report this. And those who vote in two states are being weeded out now thru computer databases.

It is amazing these days how quickly when a petition is provided that the authorities can detect who is and who is not supposed to be on that petition. They do have the security programs, and are improving on them every day.

If people don't know what they are voting for they should 1) read the newspaper (the newspaper puts out a list of who is running and for what office, several days prior to any election). and 2) they could read what the editorial columnists say, or even call the headquarters of the candidates to find out what they stand for, or get their name on the mail-out lists where that info will be delivered by the postman. They can also watch tv and listen to the debates as to what is being voted on, and hear each candidate's views when they debate. In addition, our early radio station points out the referendums being voted on and tells people exactly what the "yes" and the "no" vote on the referendum means.

So why are lots of people uninformed? Probably because they are either unaware this info is out there for them to see, or maybe because they are too lazy to look for it, or maybe they have a language barrier. If there is a large language group in a state the state makes great efforts to print the information in their language. If they are a smaller language group then they can talk with neighbors, co-workers, friends, and church goers to get their take of what's being voted on and who is running.

Some people vote a straight ticket (vote their party entirely), and others vote the candidate they like or what they supposedly stand for.

Anyone who thinks voting is too hard needs a brain transplant. A monkey can figure it out.
If you mean show a photo ID, ABSOLUTELY.
If you mean turning stupid people away from the poles, unfortunately no. People have the right to be stupid.

I used to live in New Orleans, voter fraud capitol of America. All the people who claim to care about voting and voter fraud, never gave a darn when fraud was occurring there.

Do you know why they bury people above the ground in New Orleans?
It makes it easier for them to get up and go vote.

A civics exam should be required to vote. 2 forms of ID, one with a picture and a birth certificate should be required at the polls along with a bill with the person's name and address. People should not be allowed to vote unless they know how government works and what it's responsibilities are. They should not be able to vote if they are not responsible enough to keep 2 forms of ID.

We already having a hard time getting people to go out and vote, if they make it harder, hell I'm staying home. The politicians are not doing enough for the country, for people to waste their time begging to cast a vote.
