Can I do this without changing the motherboard? I think it is an ASUS motherboard. And can I do it myself or is it too complicated. Age of Empires 3 does not run well on my machine and I want to play this game in its full glory. I have a GeForce FX5200 graphics card. I have 512 MB of RAM.

It could be your RAM causing it, as your processor and Graphics card is pretty good (Your above my specs and I can play BattleField 2 easily), so I really doubt its your processor (CPU)

But if your really sure you wanna upgrade its fairly simple, you just buy the processor, take it out of the box, pull out the old one and gently put the new one in, Make sure to touch a radiator to get rid of static-electricity from your body. remember to turn the PC off (from the wall, too) and press the power button a few times to get rid of excess static.

There will be a heat sink or a fan around the CPU (which cools it down, a CPU cant last more than 5 seconds without one) you will have to take that off first. You might want to do some reasearch before you do this, though.

You must make sure that the CPU is compatible with your Motherboard thats the most important thing, google your Motherboard name and check to see which socket it uses (Socket 939, AM2, etc)

Another thing if your going to upgrade your CPU for gaming reasons you might want to invest in an AMD rather than an Intel (Just my personal choice)

Ask a friend who knows, Thats what I would do.

With all due respect from the nature of the content in your question I would say you defenitely can not do this yourself.... at least, I would not suggest it.

It is impossible for me or anyone else to provide a certain answer to whether or not you can upgrade the CPU on that motherboard because we do not know the model / type of the board.

Being originally a Celeron sytem I would guess not. Do you have the manuals that came with it ? When your computer boots you will see a long strand of numbers at the bottom right hand corner. These contain the motherboard model & type. Press the "pause" key on your keyboard when this screen comes up so that you can copy this info down.

Check it online for specs & you will find out how fast a CPU it can handle. Good luck.

You could do it, it is not a difficult job, but the processors are not the same socket type. You will not be able to put the Pentium 4HT socket (775) from a celuron socket (478)

However here is the link so you can find your current porcessor at intel and find a replacement that will work.

Hope this helps.
