We are friends and have been for 2 years - more like office friends. I recently left his company and he hooked me up with a consultanting job with his friend's company. I was thinking about making his cookies/brownies or an apple pie. Plus he is beyond loaded so he can buy whatever he wants. Is that cheesy?

Pick something that is personal. That's the most important thing, something that says it's from you.

If you like to bake, and you know that he likes baked goods, go for it. He already knows you. You don't need to try to be "fashionable" just to impress him.

His financial status is irrelevant. You are giving him something as a token of your appreciation. Yes, if he wants something, he can go buy it. He can't buy your appreciation, which is what your gift is expressing.

If you know he likes something specific (i.e., wine) and you are capable of picking one of those somethings, sure. Don't buy a bottle of wine "just because it's supposed to be classy" if you aren't sure he likes it - or - if you don't know what you're doing. It will fail to impress if you get something icky and he knows better - that looks like you're blindly trying to suck up.

And, whatever choice you make, be sure there is something hand-written enclosed that explicitly states that you appreciate his past interactions and his efforts to help you get your new job. A nice blank-inside card would be appropriate. You might also mention that you are looking forward to working with him again in the future (if that is a possibility) or that you are looking forward to staying in touch (if that is possible) - in the business world, one shouldn't just shut the door to a business relationship, just because you are switching companies.

Go buy a decent bottle of Cabernet for like $25.

I'm sure he already has a lot of wine, but it's a nice gesture and it's classy, plus you can never have too much.

I think the baking idea is fine. Adds a personal touch to the gift!
