For his first birthday I would stay home. He isn't going to remember it and its really for you and the rest of the family to celebrate his birth. If it was me....I'd invite everyone over that you wanted there...have a nice meal and enjoy spending time with your son. You'll have plenty more birthdays to spend lots of money on him and to make sure he has those memories.......Congratulations on your son's birthday....and HAVE FUN !!!!

I have two toddlers, ages 2 and 4. I've learned that in the early years it's better to keep thing small and safe. Your little one might be overwhelmed with a big to-do (my 4yo had a birthday party at home when she was 2 and then completely melted down--too much stimulation). If you live in a warm-weather climate (we did), a park might be nice if you have other kids coming.
I personally liked the family-oriented small birthday when the kids were turning 1.

I think for a child that young...it's best and most appropriate (considering the child) to have it home - with just the parents/grandparents and closest family members and friends. The child will enjoy it so much more in his own familiar surroundings. They can be easily over-whelmed at 12 months of age - especially if taken out of their own familiarity or with far too many people around. We had a lovely birthday party for my son at home when he was one and also when he was 2. He was 3 before we did anything outside of the home.

How much do you want to spend? A first birthday is mostly for the family and friends, he's too young to appreciate how 'fancy' you'll make it!
We did our son's first birthday at a park so there would be lots of toys and activities for the other kids, plus the games we planned.
My sister always go to a Chuck E Cheese type place to keep the kids entertained and because they do all the cleaning up!
Enjoy baby's first birthday!!!

at home...it is mostly family adults anyway...have a casual evening, when cake time comes, get a small cake for the kid. Strip the kid to his diaper & let him at the cake! We did that & it was great! He had it in his hair & every where! Everyone had a great time watching him & the pics are priceless!
I did spread out plastic before the evening started!

Mcdonald's East Coast or King's Albert Park is quite nice, there is also 1 along Farrer road with a pond which is quite nice also.

At home is probably best just in case he becomes cranky and wants a nap. Also, it's a familiar setting for him.
