According to the American Federation of Teachers (aft.org), the average beginning teacher's salary in California was $34,805 in the 2002-2003 school year.

When you think about average, though, you want to remember that some made more and some made less. You also want to take into account the cost of living in different communities. Housing costs in places like San Francisco and Los Angeles are huge.

Good luck with your future plans.

Depends where you live. If you plan on living down south like San Diego or Orange County it's tough. Real tough.

But it depends what you want to do. I live and work in Orange County as a young professional making a pretty good salary, but there's no way I could think about buying a house here. It's either renting or moving somewhere else.

In order to afford a house in Los Angles/San Diego/San Francisco....U know the big cities, household income must be like $120,000 per year.

Move to fresno or visalia or tulare, the smaller cities and U may be able to eek out a living as a teacher. As far as owning a home in the big cities, just remeber that during this latest real estate boom 4 out of 10 houses sold were.... SECOND HOMES for the very wealthy

No way... my sister just started teaching and the only reason she's happy is because her fiance is a lawyer and she doesn't have to worry about money... if she wasn't with him-- she'd be eating ramen every night and warming her hands by the stove. Just kidding, but really teachers aren't compensated NEARLYas much as they should be... try teaching at a private school maybe?

It would be very hard to make a living being a teacher in CA. Do you know about how much you would be making?

I work at a school in California and my neighbor and my ex-sister-in-law are teachers and all they complain about is about not making enough money. Not making enough money isn't the problem it's how they spend it. They live beyond their means, that's why they are always broke. You just need to know how to manage your money. I don't mean to talk bad about teachers, but they just seem to be really dumb sometimes

Well, I know a lot of teachers that do. They aren't millionaires, but they have their own apartments, own cars, and love their jobs.
