Lotsa wires and connectors in that, is most likely a short or bad connection, could also use some Lubrication and Adjustments as those fail over time also. Any car can be restored to 100% OEM and working, if you have the time, money and the drive.

Power windows can be a nightmare. I know how it is. I have a 1998 ford windstar that is having a similar issue. Some things that you will want to do. Get in to the door and look at the Feed track and see if it is damaged in any way. If so replace it. (Should be around 25 to 35 bucks at a auto parts store. if the feed track is ok look at the gear on the motor. If it is worn or missing teeth then you would need to replace the gear (Most often the motor and gear have to be replaced as a single piece.) unfasten the motor from the door but leave the wires connected. While you have it off use you switch to see if the motor spins. play with the switch to see if you have a dead spot in the switch (The motor will stop spinning.) if you find a dead spot replace the switch. Anytime you are in to the door take the time to run some lube down the window guide. this will help make sure your window move properly. If after checking all these things the mechanical guide is most likely seizing up. Lube it up really good (Use gear grease not WD-40) and then run the window up and down about 4 times to work the grease in. After that you should not have any problems with the window. Let me know if this helps.

If you mean that ALL the windows are playing up, then check the main switch first. It's the cheapest part to replace (as against gears and motors) and probably the easiest. If you still have the problem after this, I'd go for gears rather than the motor/s. Motors don't fail so often as gears do. Very unlikely that it's the motor/s.
Yes, on an 18-year-old car I'd say the main switch is the problem. It's had an awful lot of use by now. But of course, the gears may be on the way out pretty soon as well, even if they're not aready...

probably need new motor but you can try changing the window seal that usually is the reason the window motor goes bad the seal is the felt lined rubber part that goes around thewindow and extends into the door if the window started to moving slower and slower you definitely need to change it since even with a new motor it will cause the window to move slow then damage the motor try hitting the door also sometimes it is the switch the only way to be sure is to meter the window wires at the motor after it gets stuck since it is intermittent i recommend doing this with a voltmeter since usually the motor loses ground when the switches are going bad and if you use a test light you will think everything is fine hope this helps

A lot of times it is the gears, although it could be any you mentioned. I doubt the motor though.
