We have been looking for counter stools for a breakfast bar that is 37" tall. The pamplet that I have says if your counter/table is 35" to 36" high a stool with a seat height of 24" to 26" will be required. We are going with the 26" inch stools.

Tables are usually 30" high with a 18" chair. If you're making a 36" bar, you should use a 24" stool or chair.

A good way to look at it is how much room do you need to get your legs under the table and so that it is ergonomic to place your hands on the table.

Take your current table and chairs and measure the distance from the chair seat to the top of the table (it doesn't matter if your current table is shorter or taller). Subtract that distance from your 36" and you'll have a really good idea of how tall your chairs should be.

There should be approximately 10 to 12 inches difference between the height of your chair or stool and the surface be it a desk, work surface, or bar(42"). The height of the table you are building is the same as a kitchen counter or work surface. A desk is normally 30 inches high.
