Greetings!
No one is stealing your signal. You are giving it to them by running an open network. If it were password enabled they could not get onto your network.
Also be aware they can access any shared files, drives etc. on your open network.
Good Luck

Yes and no, you have to understand the concept of how wireless works. You have a wireless router that sends out wireless signals recieved by other wireless devices. With lack of security yes someone can connect to the network and receive the same signals to steal the internet access.

Well to start with you can get you internet to home using DSL, Cable or Wireless. In all the case no one can steal it till its inside your home.
Now how do you use it at home for making a network :
Either wired or wireless -
If wired then if someone who can steal it must be ethan hunt from MI 4.
If wireless than you set encryption on your router & people in the neighbourhood wont be able to get into your wireless network & use your internet connection till they have your WEP key or WPA key ( these are types of security you can set on wireless network ) the length of the password depends upon the encryption level like 64bit, 128bit or 256bit. The only crazy thing about these passwords are that they are hexadecimal codes. That is numeric from 0 - 9 & albhabets from A - F.

the only way to steal a wireless internet connection is by having a wireless router sening out the internet signal. (but u can prevent this by setting up the security settings on the router)
*Router = device design to split ur internet connection for 2 or more computer with and without wires.
If u have a internet connection that has a cord going into the back of ur computer then its a lot harder to steal ur connection.

No I have a wireless router with security on it, so I'm pretty sure nobody steals my internet signal without my consent.

I have a wireless router at home, but I use a security key to lock it down.
My wife and I have the key already in our laptops, so we don't have to enter it everytime. I also have shared the key with a buddy who brings his laptop over sometimes.
I have not shared the security key with my neighbors, so they cannot access the wireless signal, my network, or my internet connection.

I have been reluctant to go wireless because I see all kinds of sites that tell you how to get the signal.

There is no privacy of any kind on an Internet. If someone wants to steal your car, your car will be stolen. If somebody wants to nibble at your bandwidth, it will happen. If someone wants to listen to your Cell Phone, they will.
Its technology baby!

yup, usually it does. Always make your wireless connection a secure one to prevent people from using your connection.

I have a couple wireless networks and I have never had an issue. Use WPA and a decent passphrase and don't broadcast your ssid and you will be ok
