what is the best way to alert my readers that i posted some new stuff on my blog?

Having an RSS or Atom feed is the general way of notifying subscribers that you've updated your blog. Any new entries will display in their aggregator when they next request your RSS feed.
If you want to notify services - like Technorati and Weblogs.com - that you've updated your blog (so they index your feed), then you "ping" their servers. Blog software like Wordpress has an option to ping remote services whenever you update your blog.
If your blog server doesn't ping services when you update, then you can manually do this using ping-o-matic( http://pingomatic.com/ ) - just enter your blog address, a blog title, and optionally your blog rss feed, and ping-o-matic then pings these services
