While you Brits pay through the nose in taxes your "royality" sits back and gives nothing back to you society. Don't you think it's time to trash that type of system and make them work for a living like everyone else?

If you believe that those "royals" actually do the physical work, even when raising money, you're nutts! Like everything else, they hire out. You don't really think they would get their hands dirty like common folks do? What a bunch of bull!! The queen is so out of touch with what's going on around her it's not funny. Wake up Brits, you're 1000 years behind the times.

Hank:

I am Canadian and the English queen is also the titular head of state here... much like the situation in Australia.

This situation should change in my opinion. I would like the royal family to simply dissappear.

Several years ago, The Economist -- a British magazine -- published a study that found Liz and her family were a net sum loss for the English even taking into consideration her value as a tourist attraction. Sure it's fine to say: "She brings in thousands of pounds in tourist money." but the reality is apparently quite different.

At very least, I would welcome her removal from things Canadian.

I can tell you for a fact that only a minority of British subjects feel that way, which is why no government has tried to abolish the monarchy since 1649. To be blunt, you are being ignorant to say they give 'nothing' back. Princess Anne, in particular, works very hard performing official functions and working for charities. For a couple in their eighties, the Queen and Prince Philip work very hard, and people in this country, as well as tourists, enjoy the pomp and ceremony which is an integral part of the monarchy. You might think theirs is a life of unimaginable ease, but they have to attend a LOT of functions they probably find boring and would rather not attend, and could do without the press intrusion and carping of many people, but carry on out of a sense of lifetime duty.

The Queen has over fifty years of experience and her advice is respected by Commonwealth leaders and prime ministers. Having a non-partisan head of state is a valuable thing - all but the fringes of the far left here respect her for the job she does, even if they disagree with the hereditary principle, whereas your head of state - the symbol of your country - is hated by half of the population. The system is hardly fair and far from perfect - God forbid that Prince Harry should become king - but has many benefits, which is why it will still be around decades from now.

Queen Elizabeth is a lady of class. She works VERY HARD!

How would you like to be on display every day of your life? How would you like everything about you and your family scrutinized by everyone - newspapers, journalists, tv people, etc etc.

How would you like to be criticized, condemned, vilified, humiliated, etc?

The Queen and her family are doing a job. They provide stability, legacy, pomp, ceremony. Have you ever seen the queen in person? Have you ever seen the Changing of the Guard? They are glorious spectacles.

The Queen visits many countries as an ambassador of her country. During the 2nd World War, she was in the British armed forces. She has been in her 'job' since she was around 20 years of age (I'm not sure of the exact age) but she has kept her word. She vowed that she would remain as Queen as long as she lives when she became the queen. How many other people can say they have kept a vow they have made?

I think she is a great woman, great mother, great grandmother, great queen and great person. Long may she live!!!

I personally disagree with the opinion that our Royal family is a bunch of freeloaders.
Yes.. my parents and british subjects do have to pay tax, but the Royal family is an important part of our society, they demonstrate the last thread of english culture in Britain, and they represent the nation, so i think they are important...then again I have only lived 14 years so this is my opinion so far.

I like the queen but I am not pleased with other royal antics from Prince Harry and others. Some royals make England look bad. I mean, if I was the queen I would be ashamed of him. Wait a minute--- she probably already is.

I was born in the US, but my Dad is British. I think the Royal Family is something that needs to be kept.
I AM glad that Princess Diana's bloodlines are now in the mix. She was a lovely lady who's heart went beyond "Royal."
I hope her children and grandchildren have some of her wonderful qualities and pass them on to future generations of Royalty.

If you were really interested in the question "how many" Brits approve of the royal family, you could go to BBC website. I'm sure they poll on this frequently.

Though you don't seem so much interested to know public opinion as you are in telling them what you think they should think.

As it doesn't seem to be your tax money involved, wouldn't the principles of democracy say it's their decision, not yours?

btw, I'm US citizen, so have no stake in this issue.

You may not believe me but the Royal Family has a job, it's called promoting tourism and tradition. Not to mention they have many charitable causes and some of the members of the royal family have quote, unquote real jobs. Princess Michael of Kent has written a series of children's books, Prince Charles has a line of organic salad dressing, proceeds go to charity, and I've also heard that he sells real estate.

They do give back either through patronage of various charities or though their times in the forces. It is only in the last decade or so that they have been seen to be freeloaders up until the 80's most British children were brought up to respect the monarchy. But seeing as most Brits these days do not have respect for anything it is hardly surprising that the monarchy is a target for ridicule.
