Without knowing how long you all have known each other. This is my opinion: I think it's better that you all started out as friends. Your ideal mate should also be able to be your "friend".

The real issue is not what will happen if things don't work out. The real issue is that you have different feelings for him than he does for you. It is better to explain that you really are fond of him but that you are not in love with him. If he really loves you he will not want to pressure you and will value your friendship above everything. The best relationships are friendships that grow. He may be a little ahead of you in the feelings department. In time you may just catch up. Only time can tell about that.

This could ruin your friendship but he obviously really really likes you to have told you.If you feel the same way go for it but before you do you should sit down and talk to him.Tell him if it doesnt work out will your friendship still be the same as what it was before? You are in a tough situation but I hope you find what you really want.......good luck!!x

i'm going through a similar situation. don't let too much time go by before talking about. if you feel something for him, then tell him (that was my HUGE mistake and i totally regret it). life is too short to not be with the people we truly love. :)

if you really like him its worth jeapordising your relationship with him as it could turn out to be something good. i think in all fairness your friendship has been damaged because he told you that he loves you and no matter how hard you try to deny it, things aren't gonna be the same. so my advice would be to go for it, u never know if you don't try! if you like him then go for it, he obviously won't reject you because he likes you to so what you waiting for!

Honey that has happened to me, too. Though in my situation he never told me; I found out from others. Please read my latest question if you want: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AtRGamleksXKxIR.Sp76aSvsy6IX?qid=20061026031848AAXMTDr My best friend liked me from the beginning. Maybe he became my friend to make me like him. The question is: do we really wanna be with our friend? Will it really work out? It's your choice.

you are in a difficult situation and i know you don't want to ruin your friendship with him so simply let your heart decide.
